And This is Me…
I am a writer and critic based in Edinburgh…
Growing up in post-punk Liverpool, I received a classical arts education from Marvel comics, Kendo Nagasaki and Mitzi Mueller at the wrestling on Friday nights at Liverpool Stadium, Tony Wilson’s Granada TV shows, What’s On, and So it Goes (1976-1977), John Peel on Radio One, Probe Records on Button Street, subtitled films on BBC Two, and Plato’s Ballroom, the short-lived arts lab hiding in plain sight in a chicken-in-a-basket cabaret club called Mr. Pickwick’s.
From early adventures in performance poetry and fanzines including Breakout, All That Thinks and Moves and The Subterranean, I very eventually went on to write for numerous publications, from The Herald, The Times and the Independent, to The Drouth, Scottish Art News, The List, Bella Caledonia and more.
I was the third wheel on Hungry Beat: The Scottish Independent Pop Underground Movement (1977-1984) (White Rabbit - 2022) with Douglas MacIntyre and Grant McPhee, have penned sleevenotes for various albums, and have written essays for assorted visual art events.
